I am writing study notes.. whoaa!!

    For the first time in my college life, I am preparing and organizing my own study notes. Why? Well Vaibhav and Aditi used to take care of notes-management for me but since I'm talking with neither of the two, it's up to me. Writing your own notes is not that atrocious actually and efficient note taking can help you increase your score by a great deal (thats what i'm aiming for). Note-Taking is an art in itself. Its all about practice. But here practice doesn't make perfect, but Perfect Practice makes Perfect . So how should one write notes? Here is how I'm doing it

1.) I keep the course-sheet (topics I need to study) in front of me. I read it twice or thrice. This gives me a notion of what I am dealing with(my initial reaction was: WTF! I have to study that much in 4 months ), which topics I already know about and for which topics I don't have sufficient study resources (books, rough notes etc.).

2.) I arrange all study material in front of me. Books, college's rough notes, surveys, reciews, printouts from wikipedia etc. Since I need to gorge something every half an hour, so I also keep a packet of parle-g within reach .

4.) In my opinion, the best place to keep notes is in a loose-leaf notebook. I use color coded bookmarks to seprate notes of different topics. If you are also using a loose-leaf notebook. be sure to buy a good notebook, as it will get a lot of wear and tear.

5.) I read all the resources I have on a given topic. I read them twice if I need to. Now comes to most crucial part - writing down the notes. Notes should be short, concise, clear and readable. I follow the following proforma while writing notes ::

1.  Main idea 1 (Sources, BookName:PageNumber)
    - detail 1
    - detail 2
      - further detail 2.1
    - detail 3
      - further detail 3.1
      - further detail 3.2
___________________________

2.  Main idea 2 (Sources, BookName:PageNumber)

Dragram Number 2.34 in Book : 'BookName' at page 56

___________________________

3.  Main idea 3 (Sources, BookName:PageNumber)

Source: C:\MyDocuments\ComputerGfx.txt
___________________________

etc.

This is very efficient. As you can see I cite source so later I can find original article.

How to study these notes?
Hehehe.. These is an algorithm to study notes :

WHILE there is a next sentence to read, DO:
  BEGIN (* while *)
    Read it, SLOWLY;
    IF you do not understand it, THEN
      BEGIN (* if *)
        re-read the previous material, SLOWLY;
        re-read the incomprehensible sentence, SLOWLY;
        IF you still don't understand it, THEN
           ask a fellow student to explain it;
        IF you still don't understand it, THEN
           ask your Teaching Assistant (TA) to explain it;
        IF you still don't understand it, THEN
           ask me;
        IF you are in an upper-level course & you still don't understand it, THEN
           write a paper about it (!)
      END (* if *)
END; (* while *)

So is my way the right way? Any suggestions welcome.  (Next few days am gonna be busy ).

OH wow, that sure some detailed writeup for writing notes!

Its been so many years since I properly wrote notes.. I usually blidnly keep writing if a teacher dictates in class, but rarely do those help. they only help if I sit and read them..

If I listen in class and write things down on my own, I actually remember everything very quickly, becasue my brain is like a event associated storage device, and once I remember me thinking and writing in my own shorthand notation.. everything comes back to me like a recap at the beginning of a soap :P

Maintaining the notes as you said, seems to be a bit of chore..I will just stick to doing my shorthand notes whenever I feel like..

I guess I should actually start attending classes and sleeping early so that I start making proper notes :/

Reading text books is like reading stories.. if I start there is no end, but end up reading loooot of unnecesary details.. I enjoy it.. but the thing is that, this reading of textbook happens when I sit in front of the book DURING EXAMS.. so not a good idea :|

anyways.. all the best for this last semester! hope the silent treatment ends :P
