Why Quiz_Master (Ashwin) watched the movie Slumdog Millionaire?
A.) It was Luck C.) Cause of Boredom
B.) It was chance D.) Destiny.
Answer is - 'D' for Destiny. Well, it is a story based on a novel (I never miss a movie based on books/comics hehehe...), plus It won 17 different awards and is nominated for four Golden Globes. Also as far as I know it is the only movie in IMDB's top 250 which is based on Indian Background. No way I could miss this movie. Watching this movie was in my Destiny :P Another reason was Danny Boyle. I've watched his every movie and specially liked Trainspotting, Sunshine, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. When it comes to 'Movies-Which-Makes-You-Think' - Danny Boyle is da Man!
I thought it will be like just another, Hollywood made- India based movie. Guess, I was wrong! This is one of the few movies you see in a lifetime. The story is simple.
A poor 18 year old guy Jamal - 'Chai-Wala' as he's titled, participate in Indian version of 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?', he is just one question away from winning a
staggering 20 million rupees But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him
on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much?
Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in
the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together
on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the
girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to
the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's
increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the
show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a
mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches
really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns
to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers
are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the
question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life
and love.
The movie's story is fantabulous. Grief, melancholy, excitement, ecstasy every emotion packed in one. Its not just about love and luck. There are few scenes which makes you think about the life of those traffic signal kids. For example when Jamal's mother gets killed in Hindu-Muslim riots- that scene made me look for tissue paper (*tears in eyes*).
And like the typical hindi movie, when Jamal and Latika finally meet- oh boy!!
I know this movie is just like a typical hindi movie. But dunnu, I like it. Definitely worth a watch!
My rating : 9.5/10.
